Pitching at the IE Venture Network Tomorrow!

Tomorrow, I will continue my search for funds by pitching at the IE Venture Network at IE Business School.

The Venture Network has a main objective of providing a platform for companies in the start-up phase to showcase their product or service in front of an esteemed panel of judges and venture capitalists. The goal is to ignite the entrepreneurial spirit of the IE community through offering useful feedback and create a meaningful connection between budding entrepreneurs and the Madrid business community.

I expect this to be an invaluable opportunity to showcase the benefit that businesses can gain from investing in me and my G20 experience.

Should you be around IE tomorrow, please stop by Maria de Molina 7 between 7-9 pm.

Heineken beer will be available for all attendees and the event is free of charge.

See you there!

What's in it for you?

When one is asking for donations, the optimal question is what am I going to get out of it? Obviously in today's economy, funds are scarce and one needs to see the benefit behind funding a certain initiative.

As I am going to the G20, I assure you that this would be a very beneficial cause to support.

1. Think of this as unconventional market research. Whether you are an individual or a business providing support; the resources, opinions and people I will have access to throughout the summit will be providing invaluable information regarding the state of the global economy. More specifically, the Summit focuses on the following issues: International Trade, Food Security, Economic Stabilization & Financial Inclusion, Sustainable development(green growth), Youth Employment and Global Governance. As a result, the intelligence being collected will be globally relevant, comprehensive and groundbreaking.

Additionally, Prime Minister Harper and Global Vision have mandated that Junior Team Canada write an in-depth report on the aforementioned issues and provide a copy to every sponsor who so wishes to receive one. Also, depending on your region of focus, I can personally ensure this is tailored so that it fits within the cultural and economic context in which you operate.

2. Building a Socially Responsible Reputation. I will personally work with you to ensure that your company receives the exposure it deserves throughout the G20, upon arrival in Canada and internationally through my network. In supporting me, you are demonstrating a dedication to youth leadership development which is something that will reflect very well on the overall image of your company.

3. Tax Deductible. Donating to this cause is fully tax deductible and you will be provided with an official tax receipt shortly upon return from the G20 Youth Summit.

4. Differentiate yourself: In the competitive landscape we live in, companies and professionals alike need to be creative in how they go about attracting attention regarding their operations. I urge you to think outside of the box and support a cause that will provide numerous intangible benefits for your organization in terms of exposure but as well as access to information that no database or consulting firm can supply you with.

Media piece regarding Canada/Mexico relations and the G20

The G20 provides nations with an important opportunity to collaborate and develop an economic framework that is representative of the dynamic global economy evolving before us. In order to ensure future stability and long-term continuity, world leaders are realizing that youth involvement in these discussions is both invaluable and imperative.

World leaders understand that decisions made today will pave the future environment in which young people will live and as a result, want to ensure that we are fully immersed in those important discussions. As demonstrated by youth participation in major summits like the G20, young people all over the world must be cognizant of the vital role we play in the development of sound social and economic policies.

As we progress towards the future, it is up to youth to spread the vision of the G20 through active engagement with those around us in order to effectively mobilize interest and commitment in ensuring world economic sustainability and security.

Throughout my undergraduate studies, I had the incredible opportunity to work in Hidalgo, Mexico with Bombardier Transportation – a Canadian company that has capitalized on the dynamic and educated populace that Mexico possesses. My experience was extraordinary as I witnessed the true mutual benefit of economic collaboration in terms of local engagement, job creation and employee education.

As Canadians, we feel incredibly fortunate to be attending such an event in a country like Mexico. The economic and political synergies both our nations possess are a testament to the success of increased collaboration and dialogue happening at both the youth and leadership level. Exemplary evidence is the past G20 in Toronto, where GlobalVision a national youth leadership development organization hosted the G20 Youth Summit . Mexican and Canadian youth leaders tackled various issues afflicting the Americas region and discussed mutually beneficial solutions to those issues. Canada sees the Y20 as an opportunity to further expand on those strategies and continue strengthening relations between both countries.

On behalf of Global Vision’s Junior Team Canada, I want to thank President Calderon for involving youth from the regions of Mexico in these important discussions. Global Vision-“the Producer of Global leaders since 1991” looks very much forward to deepening relations with Mexico at the Y20  through the establishment of personal ties and understanding between the future leaders.

How can the world achieve financial stability?

A major goal of the upcoming G20 is to achieve global financial stability. The question posed to me by a potential investor is “How is this mandate to be achieved?” A very difficult and involving question, one I admit is daunting, however I am always up for a challenge.

One must first be cognizant of the role that policy plays in the economic future of all nations. We live in a world dominated by capitalist ideologies which advocates less regulation and less involvement of the government to essentially keep markets "free". The question of sustainability is contradictory to this boom and bust ideology, (the Financial Crisis of 2008 being a prime example). This has left global policymakers cringing and with an understanding that this module is flawed. According to Jan Scholte “Although capitalism promotes economic efficiency, (although not consistently), global free markets often perpetuate more social issues such as ecological degradation, oligopoly, democratic deficits” and in my opinion short-sighted economic strategies.

This provides great food for thought, no? It does set a great point of view to answer the matter at hand yet it also poses a more interesting question: Is Financial Sustainability even possible or is it a fairytale notion?

I personally think the answer to achieving financial stability globally is to adapt a new ideology and I call it “The Reformist Revolution. What is a reformist you ask? Well, a reformist understands that the capitalist ideology is here to stay, (at least for now), but that it can be a force of social good if it is re-formed and re-organized in a non-liberalist way which encourages economic efficiency and stability. This means that, it is understood businesses all over the world must think of the bottom line and generate revenues to remain afloat but that they must be aware of all major stakeholders and ensure what they are doing is not harming anyone or anything.

This sounds like wishful thinking but if governments began implementing certain institutional frameworks that encouraged their treasuries to monitor corporate responsibility, certain economic disasters could potentially be avoided.

In summary, the following could be adapted to help create further financial stability:

"Reform the notion of capitalism" but since this won't happen immediately, do the following:

1. Create institutional frameworks allowing for timely identification of risks as they develop while providing governments incentives to tackle those risks immediately. Furthermore, simplify the process for policymakers to deal with those issues before they get out of hand.

2. Create a set of indicators that allow policy makers to identify when certain bubbles are growing in severity and ensure that governments all have the understanding of what those indicators mean and how to act upon them.

3.  Ensure more international focus and coordination in order to identify the degree that certain economic situations feed into that of other nations, which can eventually create another global meltdown. Essentially, one cannot wait until a crisis has emerged prior to engaging in meaningful cross-nation dialogue.

All in all, more collaboration worldwide is required and new ideologies need to be embraced by those in power. Profit can no longer be the main driver of our behaviour and the global population needs to begin developing new mentalities behind what constitutes success. While my answer may not fully encompass a full global solution it is definitely a great way forward to Financial Sustainability.

When I get back from the G20, I will once again tackle this question and then we will see what can be developed to make not only the financial system, but the world a more stable place.

What is the G20 exactly? Why does it exist?

Many people have heard about the G20 but do people actually know what it does or what purpose it serves?

The G20 consists of the world's twenty most important economies who make up roughly 83% of the world's total GDP. The mandate of the G20 is to come together and collaborate on creating a global financial system that is secure and sustainable. The group was established in the early 1990's amid the Asian financial crisis, however, the G20 did not really gain steam or any public attention until 2008 when George W. Bush called on all the financial ministers of the world's top 20 economies for a meeting in Washington to help avoid another depression.

Although the mandate of the G20 is mainly focused on creating sustainable financial platforms and ensuring future stability worldwide, many more issues are to be tackled. In my opinion, when you group twenty leaders from the world's top economies, many non-financial issues will come to the forefront and dialogue will be initiated in order to find ways to tackle them. Said issues can range from anything regarding climate change, the Arab spring, democracy, youth employment etc.

In 2008, amid a global financial meltdown, Canada remained extremely strong and weathered the storm very effectively. While the American's were suffering from a pneumonia, we merely caught a cold and this was due to the conservative lending practices of our banks and the sound financial governance our country possesses.

As a Canadian, I expect our team to play a significant role in the discussions that are to take place throughout the summit. For far too long Canada has had little visibility worldwide and few have recognized our leadership potential, however, I believe our resilience throughout the financial crisis is demonstrative of the significant role we will play in the global arena in the future.

What do you think? What are your thoughts on the G20 meeting as a whole? Should more countries be involved?

Information on G20 selection process and Globalvision

Global Vision

Statement of Mission, Vision and Values
We will champion the enterprising spirit of young Canadians in the promotion of Canadian industry and culture as we achieve recognition as a major force in the global marketplace.
Inspired by this irrepressible drive to become world-class, we will provide access to national and global networks for young Canadians to acquire the international development, trade and cross-cultural experience to become the next leaders of Canada.
Grounded in the enduring principles of integrity, compassion and mutual respect in everything we say and do, we will touch the hearts and minds of Canadians in communities across the land.

How The Process Works
Global Vision organizes the Canadian youth delegation for the the Prime Minister’s special invite youth summits every year to further its goal of igniting young Canadians to take on leadership roles within their communities and to better understand the changing global workplace.

The Selection Process
The program strives to reach all Canadian regions with its Global Leaders Centres (GLCs) and all participants are then invited to apply to join a Junior Team Canada (JTC) Mission. A competitive selection process then chooses between 20-30 youth Ambassadors from close to 800 applicants for the trade mission team every year. From this team, a smaller delegation of 2-4 individuals are then chosen by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mr. Terry Clifford to be the Canadian Youth delegation at the APEC Summit. There are also sometimes room for other special invite summits such as the Summit of America’s, G8, or, in this case, the G20.

What Does It Accomplish?
The JTC program positions youth to get a head start on career opportunities in both national and international job markets by providing leadership training that links theory with real world experiences. Youth engage their communities’ businesses and organizations to bring them forward with pride to the rest of Canada and the world.

Giving Back
With a new perspective on the world, each participant is expected to share their experiences with their community. The goal is to explore and enable partnerships between their own local industries and those in the emerging markets.

Who is this guy and why is he going to the G20?

Hi Everyone,

My name is Kyle Fiore and I am a Master in Corporate Communication student at the IE school of Communication ( Instituto de Empresa) in Madrid, Spain.

The purpose of this post is in regards to my recent selection amongst hundreds as one of 7 youth delegates for Canada’s Youth G20 team, wherein by I will be traveling to Puebla, Mexico to join the other nineteen youth teams. In order to represent Ontario and Canada at this forum, I am seeking out funding from individuals and organizations such as yours. Each of the seven delegates from Canada is required to raise $3,500.The purpose of the G20-Y20 delegation is to give youth from all of the twenty nations the chance to address the three mandates currently being discussed by the G20. The three pillars of the G20 are as follows:

1. Policy coordination between its members in order to achieve global economic stability and sustainable growth;

2. To promote financial regulations that reduce risks and prevent future financial crises; and

3. To create a new international financial architecture.

Throughout this experience, we will formalize a draft of our recommendations and opinions on the G20’s portfolio of issues, and forward this on to the council at their meeting held in June 18-19, 2012. In preparation for our tour we are developing profiles of each country, briefing each other on G20 issues, and conducting meetings with members of DFAIT to ensure that we will be the best team at the summit.

It is a great honour to represent Canada at events such as the G20 summit. Your financial contribution to Team Canada would be tax deductable and I personally would ensure that your brand would be a distinctive addition to this event.

In order to make donations, you may do so directly on my Chipin account (Post above)
